July 14 2010 Meeting - Telstra Broadband Service

Meetings & notices

Special guest for our 14 July 2010 meeting is Mr Chris Taylor, General Manager of Telstra Countrywide.

We have been very critical of poor broadband service and infrastructure in the Gungahlin district - particularly Telstra's infamous Crace Exchange.

Mr Taylor requested an opportunity to respond to our criticisms - and we are more than happy to give him that opportunity. We're sure that many Gungahlin residents who've been struggling for years with slow broadband service, or are even still stuck on dial-up, will want to explain their personal circumstances to Mr Taylor too.

The meeting is on Wednesday 14 July, from 7.30 pm, at the Palmerston Community Centre, Tiptree Crescent, just behind the Palmerston shops.

GCC April Meeting Wednesday 14th

Meetings & notices

Our meeting on Wednesday 14th will have a transport focus, with ACTPLA, Roads ACT experts and consultants presenting:

  • The Sandford Road extension at Mitchell. Actually to be called Morrisett Road, it will link Sandford Road from Flemington Road at Mitchell past the Bimberi Youth Detention Centre, to to Federal Highway at the Antill Street roundabout. This link provides an important opportunity to establish a Park'n'Ride facility at the Flemington Road end. It would also be available to NSW commuters. The P'n'R would allow many people to use the REDEX bus service instead of rat-running through Watson, Hackett, Ainslie and Braddon into Civic.
  • Noise abatement plans for the Well Station Drive extension at Harrison. The road may be going ahead in an undesirable location for existing Harrison residents, but we need to make sure that ACTPLA's plans for noise abatement works measure up, without residents being saddled with ugly concrete barriers.

See you at the Palmerston Community Centre, Tiptree Crescent (behind the shops), from 7.30pm.

In praise of community

Meetings & notices

Last night, the 8th of April, Gungahlin Community Council held its April meeting at Palmerston Community Centre.

What was particularly exciting about last night for me was the amount of Gungahlin residents who attended a GCC meeting for the first time.

These members of the Gungahlin Community were interested, and engaged with the speakers on issues that affect us as a community.

Tony Gill was wonderful, I thought, and seemed to me to be genuinely helpful and accessible in regard to solving traffic issues within the district.

He has already acted on several initiatives proposed by Council, such as providing a footpath in Harrison and trialling the painting of the pavers in the pedestrian crossings at the marketplace while pursuing options for a more permanent solution.

Tony noted that the pavers are cracked, and is investigating the possibility of replacing them with standard asphalt pedestrian crossings.

Noel McCann and his team presented a PowerPoint on the history of the airport and the measures they have taken so far to improve issues with noise, and their future plans in regard to this issue and also in regard to expanding their business.

May 2009 meeting - Town Centre plan and Greens MLA

Meetings & notices

The next GCC meeting is Wednesday 13 May. ACTPLA will update us on the Gungahlin town centre planning and traffic study. And Greens MLA Caroline le Couteur will explain her bill aiming to ban inefficient hot water systems.

April 2009 meeting - Roads, Airport

Meetings & notices

The next GCC meeting on Wednesday 8 April will be all about transport!

Roads ACT Director Tony Gill will update us on roads projects and Canberra Airport's Noel McCann presenting the Airport Master Plan.

February 2009 meeting - Gungahlin library, Shane Rattenbury

Meetings & notices

The first GCC meeting for 2009 will be held on Wednesday 11 February.

The Director of ACT Library and Information Service Vanessa Little will be present to discuss the plans for the new Gungahlin Library (to be a joint facility with the adjacent Gungahlin College) and the wider strategic plan for the future of libraries in the ACT.

Also present will be new ACT Greens Molonglo MLA Shane Rattenbury. The world and ACT economic woes look to be forcing a prioritisation of their election commitments, and their agreement with ACT Labor. Talk with Shane about these issues and how he's finding life as the ACT Speaker.

See you at the Palmerston Community Centre, next to the Palmerston shops, Tiptree Crescent, at 7.30 pm.

Meetings are the second Wednesday of every month. Here's a map of the meeting location.

Peter will be facilitating our Meet the Candidates night on 8 October. This meeting we will be planning how we run the meeting to ensure fair treatment for all candidates and opportunity for residents to get concerns answered.

In his final column with the Canberra Times, Peter made some scathing comments about government in Canberra (not just the current government) including Gungahlin's poor planning and lack of broadband access.

Meetings & notices

The July GCC meeting will be held on Wednesday 9 July.
