Last night, the 8th of April, Gungahlin Community Council held its April meeting at Palmerston Community Centre.
What was particularly exciting about last night for me was the amount of Gungahlin residents who attended a GCC meeting for the first time.
These members of the Gungahlin Community were interested, and engaged with the speakers on issues that affect us as a community.
Tony Gill was wonderful, I thought, and seemed to me to be genuinely helpful and accessible in regard to solving traffic issues within the district.
He has already acted on several initiatives proposed by Council, such as providing a footpath in Harrison and trialling the painting of the pavers in the pedestrian crossings at the marketplace while pursuing options for a more permanent solution.
Tony noted that the pavers are cracked, and is investigating the possibility of replacing them with standard asphalt pedestrian crossings.
Noel McCann and his team presented a PowerPoint on the history of the airport and the measures they have taken so far to improve issues with noise, and their future plans in regard to this issue and also in regard to expanding their business.

The first GCC meeting for 2009 will be held on Wednesday 11 February. The Director of ACT Library and Information Service Vanessa Little will be present to discuss the plans for the new Gungahlin Library (to be a joint facility with the adjacent Gungahlin College) and the wider strategic plan for the future of libraries in the ACT. Also present will be new ACT Greens Molonglo MLA Shane Rattenbury. The world and ACT economic woes look to be forcing a prioritisation of their election commitments, and their agreement with ACT Labor. Talk with Shane about these issues and how he's finding life as the ACT Speaker. See you at the Palmerston Community Centre, next to the Palmerston shops, Tiptree Crescent, at 7.30 pm.
Meetings are the second Wednesday of every month. Here's a map of the meeting location. |

The December GCC meeting will be held on Wednesday 10 December. Late notice: David Dawes from the Chief Minister's Dept will attend to update us on planned land releases around Gungahlin. As it's the last meeting of a pretty successful 2008, we'll have a light meeting, with no special guests. Come along and have a glass of wine, some light supper, and general discussion about where Gungahlin is going, and where to focus our efforts in the coming year. |

The August GCC meeting will be held on Wednesday 12 August. Attending will be Peter Martin, the (just departed) economics editor from the Canberra Times, who was a late cancellation for our July meeting. Peter will be facilitating our Meet the Candidates night on 8 October. This meeting we will be planning how we run the meeting to ensure fair treatment for all candidates and opportunity for residents to get concerns answered. In his final column with the Canberra Times, Peter made some scathing comments about government in Canberra (not just the current government) including Gungahlin's poor planning and lack of broadband access.

The new ACTION bus service we lobbied so hard for between Gungahlin and the airport/Brindabella Park will start in May.
It's critical that the service is well patronised right from the start and that bus stops are located appropriately to pick up Gungahlin residents along the way. We've raised with ACTION and Canberra Airport's Tom Snow that we need a three-way strategy to promote the service in the lead-up to it starting.
They agreed, and at our March meeting on Wednesday 12th, ACTION boss Tom Elliott and Liz Clarke - Manager, Business Alliance and Performance, together with the Airport's Commercial Manager Jeanette Hall, will meet with us to kick off this process.
Some early thoughts: We can pool the resources of the Airport's communications channels with the BBP workforce, ACTION and the Airport's proposed advertising, our newsletter Gungahlin Smokesignals which now goes to more than 14,500 households, and our website, to make sure all potential patrons know exactly when the service will start. Some of us work in government departments with office out there, and can also get messages out through internal bulletin boards.
On bus stops, we need to make sure not only that they are located appropriately, but that there are safe areas for the buses to pull off (Horse Park Drive is 80kph!) and safe access for pedestrians. These need to be in place before the service starts.
If you are a likely patron of the new service, we'd really appreciate your input.
See you at the Palmerston Community Centre, next to the Palmerston shops, Tiptree Crescent, at 7.30 pm. Meetings are the second Wednesday of every month (except January). Here's a map of the meeting location.
