Aircraft noise isn't a significant problem in Gungahlin as yet, but as new suburbs are developed closer to the Federal Highway, this is bound to change.
At this latest meeting GCC Vice President Jonathon Reynolds and I pursued the issue of the Noise Abatement Zone, which currently doesn't cover any of the suburbs from Gungahlin east and north. A goal of GCC is to have the line moved to cover all of the current and proposed Gungahlin suburbs.
Air Services Australia delegates conceded that under the current operational procedures, shifting the boundary of the Noise Abatement Zone would not affect the operations of jet services. But they refused to look into shifting the line.
This leaves us with no option but to pursue the issue through political avenues, and I have already discussed the issue with Senator Kate Lundy, plus sent her the following email.
We'll keep you posted. The full meeting notes follow. There are also links to Air Services Australia reports that show the flight tracks of aircraft as they depart the airport and fly over Gungahlin:-

Subject: Canberra aircraft Noise Abatement Area
Hello Senator
When me met recently as part of the Curfew 4 Canberra delegation, I discussed with you the current alignment of the Canberra Noise Abatement Area, and that it does not cover large parts of Gungahlin.
I have attached a copy of the most recent quarterly report from Air Services Australia, and I've posted an article on the issue on our website.
You'll see from the map underlay on Figure 11 (page 22) that all parts of Gungahlin essentially east and north of the town centre are not protected by the Noise Abatement Area.
Also on our website article are the notes of the meeting as supplied by the Canberra Airport. In them you'll see that ASA conceded that "Adjusting NAA over Gungahlin will not impact aircraft height as they have to be 7,000 ft before turning left under the new SIDs", but also that despite this "Airservices confirmed that Airservices Australia advised ACT Government that the NAAs were fixed and would not be moved. This advice was given prior to these suburbs being developed."
We are sure you'll agree that it would be prudent to make appropriate adjustments to the Noise Abatement Area early on, when the changes are more easily achieved, than after extensive development. However the above advice, as given by ASA's Ken Owen, indicates that this isn't a decision likely to be taken at the officer level, but would require some political impetus.
Given that - in ASA's own words - the line can be moved without adverse impact on jet service operations, we seek your assistance in pursuing this change.
Thank you in anticipation of your assistance.

Alan Kerlin

- Air Services Australia NOISE AND FLIGHT PATH MONITORING SYSTEM CANBERRA QUARTERLY REPORT OCTOBER - DECEMBER 2007
In this report (PDF file 1.7MB), Figure 6 on page 17 shows the jet departures, and Figure 11 on page 22 shows the flight tracks for jet aircraft departing to the north and turning over Gungahlin, with the Noise Abatement Zone shown as the red line. It clearly shows that large parts of Gungahlin are not covered by the Noise Abatement Zone.
