The holiday period brought with it another surge in either unthinking or just plain disgraceful behaviour from many residents dumping unwanted goods around overflowing charity bins and around charity premises. The mess around the collection of bins near the Gungahlin Woolworths triggered particular criticism from some GCC Facebook fans. Pete Jordan has called for the bins to be removed. “It must cost the charities involved more than it is worth,” he said. He also pointed out that Salvos and Lifeline both have storefronts in Mitchell, and Vinnies is just up the road in Hibberson Street. Lina Blair accused people of just dumping, and echoed the call for the bins to go. Neville Barrett of the Salvos gave an insight into the extent of the problem, saying it costs them around $6 million annually to remove stuff dumped outside their stores. Without doubt they are many people using the charities as an excuse to save a few dollars on dump fees. This is uncharitable and selfish, and undermines the good work that groups like Vinnies and Salvos do. If you are thinking about donating goods, don’t take damaged or broken goods. If you’d be happy to reuse it, then drop it into one of the shopfronts during the week or on Saturdays. Do the right thing heh? What do you think? Have your say on the problem: facebook.com/gungahlin

I totally agree with Pete Jordan and would like to see the bins removed from Gungahlin Marketplace. They are an eyesore with the extent of rubbish dumped there, of course we tend to overlook the main reason for the dumping, it is because the ACT Government in their wisdom started charging we the taxpayers tip fees, consequently people won't pay it so they use the bins as rubbish dumps, which in itself is a low act. Thank goodness we still have some responsible people living here who use them for their purpose, to help the needy. What do we need to do to have them removed, as other Centres have had to take this action due to the continual dumping of rubbish. We all need to take pride in our Community and make it a better place.
