Plans are afoot for a series of ponds near the Gungahlin Town Centre. Located in open space around the Birralee Scout Hall the wetlands will perform a number of ecological and aesthetic functions.
They’ll also provide an outdoor learning space for the nearby Burgmann College and the proposed Gungahlin College. The three ponds will play an important role in filtering upstream stormwater of nutrients and slowing down flood water. The ponds will also provide water for irrigation of the Gungahlin College precinct. The ponds will improve urban biodiversity.
They’ll be planted with a range of local occurring wetland species including reeds, sedges and herbaceous perennials. Pond margins will be planted with a range of hardy species like Lomandra, Callistemon, Grevillea and Acacia.
This project is being managed collaboratively by the Department of the Environment, Climate Change, Energy and Water and the ACT Planning and Land Authority.
