Do you have a woodheater?
Unless it is one of those super-efficient pellet burners, you just know it has an impact on your neighbours don't you?
The ACT Government is offering subsidies of $600 for you to replace your old wood heater. So far 550 homes have taken advantage of the offer.
The government's media release follows:
Canberrans with wood heaters wanting to move to a more environmentally friendly heating system will have a helping hand from this weekend, with Chief Minister Jon Stanhope announcing that the Wood Heater Replacement Program would operate again this season.Under the program, householders who choose to replace their wood heater with a gas heater will receive a $600 rebate. The program begins this Saturday and the subsidy is available for householders until the end of August.
'Canberra's overall air quality is excellent compared to other Australian cities,' Mr Stanhope said today. 'However, air pollution can become a problem in winter, due to emissions from wood heaters used for home heating, particularly in the Tuggeranong Valley.
'The ACT Government's wood heater replacement program, run in conjunction with ActewAGL, is in its fifth year and demonstrates the Government's commitment to help protect the environment and the quality of life in our city.
'Since the introduction of the program in 2004, more than 550 households have replaced their wood heaters with gas heaters.'
Mr Stanhope said the program was another example of the ACT Government working with the private sector to produce good environmental outcomes for the national capital.
Application forms for the rebate are available from ACT Government Shopfronts and the Territory and Municipal Services website at www.tams.act.gov.au or by phoning Canberra Connect on 13 22 81.
Completed claim forms must be submitted to Environment Protection and Heritage by close of business on 31 August.
