All candidates for the seat of Fraser and lead Senate candidates for ACT have been offered the opportunity to submit their views for Gungahlin residents via a 500-word article. Following is the unedited statement received from Bob McMullan, Fraser Candidate - Australian Labor Party. The following comments do not necessarily represent the views of the GCC.
I have been the Federal representative for the Gungahlin area since 1998, and in that time I have seen it grow from tiny beginnings into a strong community. During this time I have been a strong advocate for better infrastructure and employment opportunities in Gungahlin. I am asking for your support in order to continue to represent Gungahlin residents and to help.
Employment in Gungahlin
I have put forward a plan to locate government departments in city centres outside of the Barton and Civic areas. This policy, which I will be advocating for as part of a Rudd Labor government, would be of great benefit to Gungahlin residents, and would also be more cost effective for the public service. The significant employment numbers that a government department represents would also lead to an associated jump in employment in all the areas of service that are necessary to support a department.
Transport issues
One of the most serious transport issues facing Gungahlin residents is actually outside the area - the airport precinct. The traffic problems around the airport at the moment flow on to residents using Horse Park Drive. Labor has committed $30 million to upgrade the Canberra airport transport corridor, and this will have a significant positive impact on traffic problems in Gungahlin.

Broadband infrastructure
Labor's broadband plan will have positive results for Gungahlin residents. Only Labor is willing to make the real financial investment which is necessary to create a modern broadband system that will be available to all Australians at affordable rates. After so many years of being relegated as a broadband backwater, Gungahlin deserves world-class broadband service.

Climate Change
Climate change is one of the most serious issues that any government will face. That's why it is important that the Australian government acknowledge the full extent of the problem and put in place solid policies to tackle climate change.
Only the Labor Party is willing to implement policies at every level to make an immediate impact on climate change. On a national level we will ratify Kyoto, negotiate its successor and put in place a target of 20 percent renewable energy use by the year 2020. On a local level we will give families assistance in taking measures to improve their energy efficiency and lessening their personal contribution to climate change.

I am asking for your support on November 24 so that I can help put these policies in place. If you need any more information, please visit my website at www.bobmcmullan.com or ring my office on (02) 6247 4396.
