Candidate Statement - Michael Denborough

News - Government

All candidates for the seat of Fraser and lead Senate candidates for ACT have been offered the opportunity to submit their views for Gungahlin residents via a 500-word article. Following is the unedited statement received from Michael Denborough, Senate Candidate - Nuclear Disarmament Party. The following comments do not necessarily represent the views of the GCC.

We are living in the most dangerous time in history. The clock in the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists reads five minutes to midnight, which means that we are closer to a global nuclear war than at any time since the Cold
War.

By allowing our government to join the US led invasion of Iraq and Afghanistan we are all guilty of gross abuse of human rights. We are responsible for the more than 1 million civilian deaths that have occurred in Iraq, for the 2 million displaced people in Iraq, for the 2 million Iraqi people displaced in neighbouring countries, for the decimation of 50% of Iraq's infrastructure where people are without water and have raw sewage in the streets. The invasion of Afghanistan is causing the people there to hate us and leading to the recruitment of terrorists  who wish to destroy the West.

Not satisfied with the disaster that he has already caused George Bush is threatening daily to bomb Iran, and his attitude and threats are similar to the ones he used before the invasion of Iraq. If we allow this to happen it
could lead to World War 3. The two major parties are silent on this great issue, and we are standing so that people can vote for a party which is strongly critical of Bush's plans for escalating the War, and for the immediate return of our troops from Iraq and Afghanistan.

There are other important nuclear issues at this election. Both the Coalition and the ALP plan to sell our uranium to all and sundry for short term economic gain regardless of the radioactive contamination that this
will cause, and the inevitable spread of nuclear weapons throughout the world. The coalition also plans to build 25 nuclear power plants on the east coast, and an international nuclear waste dump in the Northern Territory. A vote for the NDP is a vote against this. Our other policies can be seen on our web site: www.nucleardisarmament.org

As far as local issues are concerned I strongly support:
1. An significant increase in nursing home beds to alleviate the current crisis of health care in the ACT
2. Free tertiary education for all who are qualified for it
3. Federal government employment in Gunghalin
4. A major improvement in public transport in Gunghalin and at the airport and the development of a light rail network
5. Broadband access for all in Gunghalin
