ACT election candidates named

The ALP was the first off the mark with the announcement of their candidates for the upcoming Territory elections in October.

The majority of Gungahlin is within the very large Molonglo electorate, with seven members.

The lone suburb of Nicholls is located within the Ginninderra electorate (see our previous discussion about trying to remedy this through the electorate boundary redistribution) with five members.

Then City News reported the launch of a new party of community-based candidates, being organised by Ric Hingee, whom having lost his Duffy home in the 2003 fires, became known as a victims' advocate. To date only Mike Crowther has been identified - as a candidate for Ginninderra.

The ALP has nominated (in no order yet stated) for Molonglo Andrew Barr MLA, Eleanor Bates, Simon Corbell MLA, Louise Crossman, Katy Gallagher MLA, Mike Hettinger and David Mathews. Of the new names, Eleanor Bates has been a regular attendee at GCC meetings for well over a year, and Mike Hettinger has been noted by the Canberra Times as campaigning against the ALP's school closures and against the Gungahlin Drive extension.

ALP nominees for Ginninderra are John Stanhope MLA, Mary Porter MLA, Chris Bourke, Adina Cirson, Dave Peebles and Paschal Leahy.

Meanwhile, the Liberals have been caught off-guard by the announcement that a number of key party supporters will instead be supporting candidates via the "Canberra Business Club", but with no candidates named as yet.
