The Gungahlin Community Council (GCC) is a voluntary, not for profit, community-based association operating in the Gungahlin district of Canberra, in the Australian Capital Territory. This area covers the north-northwest of the ACT between the ACT/NSW border, the Barton Highway to the south, and the Federal Highway to the east, including the village of Hall. Our objective is to preserve and improve the social, cultural, economic and environmental well-being of Gungahlin and the Gungahlin community.
Note: GCC is not a local government. If you have enquiries relating to government issues, we may be able to help you. However, the main contact for ACT Government enquiries is Canberra Connect phone 13 22 81 or at canberraconnect.act.gov.au.

GCC Meetings

The next GCC meeting will be held on
Wednesday 9th May 2012 - 7:30pm
at the Gungahlin Library.

Kristin Blume from Transport Planning to provide an update on the information session scheduled to discuss the proposed Rapid Transport System - Bus or Light Rail - from Gungahlin to Civic later in the month.

David Dawes, Chief Executive of the Economic Development Directorate to tell us about planning and development in Gungahlin.

UPDATE 27 June 2007

We've lodged an objection to the ACT Electoral Boundaries Committee's proposed boundary redistribution.

As part of the submission, we plugged in the latest population projections and remodelled our proposal to form two 5-member electorates for the northern part of Canberra and make Brindabella the 7-member electorate.

Although we weren't able to come up with a solution that puts all of Gungahlin together in the one electorate, our solution from our first submission works with the new numbers with Nicholls still staying in Ginninderra, but the sprawl of Molonglo largely corrected.

You can read the submission here.

UPDATE 30 May 2007

The ACT Electoral Commission has not agreed with our submission for the Electoral Boundary Review. Instead they have taken a minimal change approach, but it seems an opportunity lost for Gungahlin. Their solution was to move Palmerston from the Molonglo electorate into Ginninderra, meaning now we would have both Nicholls and Palmerston separated from the rest of Gungahlin electorally.

Our submission (below) gave the Electoral Commission a solution that would set up the electorates for the future growth patterns in Canberra, and would bring the elected representatives closer geographically to the people they have to represent. Instead their report fiddles at the margins. That's fine for the rest of Canberra, but further fragments our representation. It's a poor outcome for Gungahlin.

But they have another round of public comment, so we have another chance to see if we can address the concerns they raised in their report. ACTPLA head Neil Savery is on the Review Board - a person I have developed the utmost respect for during our dealings through the Planning and Development Forum. So I guess we'll just have to plug the revised population numbers they used into our modelling tool and see what we can come up with, then hope an updated submission from us gets a good hearing.

10 March 2007

The ACT Government commenced a review of electoral boundaries in March. The Gungahlin Community Council has a very good Excel modelling tool (thanks to Jonathon Reynolds) that allows us to easily test different configurations of number of members, numbers of electorates, and what suburbs are in what electorate. We spent quite a few hours testing different configurations looking for solutions that would give more democratic outcomes, better representation, and in particular, get all of Gungahlin into the one electorate.
