Meet the Candidates Evening

News - Government

UPDATE: 10 candidates confirmed, but Liberals can't make it.

The Gungahlin Community Council will hold a Meet the Candidates evening candidates for the seat of Fraser and the ACT Senate on Wednesday 7/11 from 7.30 pm at the Palmerston Community Centre, Tiptree Crescent, Palmerston (behind the shops).

Polling is showing that the voters of Canberra may well decide the future of the incoming government's reform agenda - whichever party dominates the House of Representatives.

Traditionally regarded as having safe seats, Canberra has now become critical, with a single Canberra Senator potentially holding the Senate balance of power. Commentators believe preferences will decide the outcome for Canberra. This means that every local candidate - both Upper and Lower House - will play a vital role in the outcome via their preference directions.

The potential combinations of outcomes are fascinating, and having something of the marginal electorate status can only be good for Canberra.

We believe that this is the only such event planned for Fraser, and have invited all lead Senate candidates and all candidates for the seat of Fraser.

We will focus on questions from residents, but will be asking all candidates to address four key federal issues for Gungahlin and for northern Canberra:
  • Federal Government employment location
  • Major transport and public transport infrastructure
  • Broadband access
  • Climate change
Confirmed attendees follow.

As we wish to give residents the best possible opportunity to get to know the candidates on a personal level, we will not be using the traditional debating format.

Instead, we will have "talking circles" - one candidate and one facilitator to a circle, and people can move from group to group. Facilitators will take questions and ensure everyone remains civil.

We will videotape as many candidates as possible for our YouTube page and website www.gcc.asn.au for people unable to attend on the night. Media has been invited.

Looking forward to seeing you there.
