Whenever there is mention of "more politicians" there is an
inevitable cry from some people for whom any politician is one too many
- until they need their elected representative to help them with a
problem...
Crispin Hull gives a very good appraisal of the current situation
in ACT, and mounts the case for maintaining three electorates, but
increasing the MLA numbers to three per electorate. He argues that
having seven MLAs per electorate gives a strong chance of getting some
minor party or independent MLAs elected.
The spin-off from this is that ACT would be more likely to return to minority government, where the governing party would have to remain completely accountable throughout their term - not just at election time. I think this is critical in the ACT where there is only one house - only through a minority government will we have viable checks and balances on the government.
