The ACT Government has awarded a tender to construct its new $40 million youth detention centre in north Canberra.

Replacing the outdated Quamby Centre in Symonston, the Mitchell development will provide rehabilitation management for up to 40 remandees or prisoners aged from 10 to 18.

Minister for Children and Youth Katy Gallagher says the Government is hoping for a completion date of June next year.

"Now we can proceed to the construction phase," she said.

"Certainly the Gungahlin community have been fantastic and have welcomed this facility.

"It will bring jobs to that area and more importantly it will provide a first class rehabilitation centre for young people who are sentenced to a period of time in our juvenile detention facilities."
