A key concern of the ACT Planning and Land Authority is the development of communities and the fostering of sustainability. ACTPLA has engaged the Australian National University to conduct a research project to better understand attitudes and behaviours around ideas of community and sustainability among the residents of Canberra’s new greenfield suburbs.
Specifically, 40 residents of the Gungahlin Town Centre and Harrison will be interviewed and ‘focus grouped’ by two ANU researchers for this purpose. Recruitment of participants is scheduled to take place in the next few weeks, and the interviews and focus groups will hopefully take place shortly thereafter. The project findings will be used for both policy development and scholarly purposes, and additionally may be used to inform later, larger-scale, longitudinal research. Individuals will not be identified in the writing up of the research and the project has been approved by the ANU Human Research Ethics Committee.
The lead researcher for this project at the ANU is Dr Alastair Greig, a Reader in Sociology in the School of Social Sciences. Dr Greig can be contacted at alastair.greig @ anu.edu.au.
