Recently GCC Treasurer Barry Dee wrote to Roads ACT about the need for a pedestrian crossing between the Gungahlin Library and the corner outside the Centrelink office. We've received a reply from Roads ACT that says basically that they don't think it is warranted.
We said:
"The Gungahlin Community Council has been asked by several people including users & staff of the Gungahlin library, Gungahlin Youth Centre, Gungahlin Child & Family Centre & the disability housing tenants in Ernest Cavanagh St. as to when is a marked pedestrian crossing going to be provided across Ernest Cavanagh St.
"We now have the situation where the main community facilities for Gungahlin are isolated in regards to a safe pedestrian crossing from the main shopping centre/town square for a large vulnerable & disadvantage group as well as other residents of Gungahlin who wish/need to use these facilities."
Interestingly, we already have a crossing, with speed hump and lighting in the middle of vacant land down Hibberson Street towards Magnet Mart! So we can have crossings in the middle of nowhere, but not where there are specific destinations and users requesting it...go figure.
