Sports Fields and Stage 4 Water Restrictions

News - Territory Services

UPDATE 19 June 2007

Thanks to the Canberra community already dropping their water consumption to near Stage 4 levels even without the restrictions being brought in, coupled with a beautiful few days of good rains, Stage 4 has been deferred by another month at least. Planning for managing ACT's sports fields through a continuing drought will continue, but the reprieve will be a relief for our sports clubs.

With Stage 4 water use restrictions due to come into being from 1 July, one of the areas of greatest concern is how sports clubs will continue to operate.

ACT Sport and Recreation Services recently embarked on a community consultation process to inform groups of the likely problems and seek assistance in prioritising what fields would need to be maintained and what fields could be left to the weather gods.

The GCC was contacted about the public meeting that was held a couple of weeks ago - but only the day before the meeting was to be held. So we have some concerns that in the rush through this process some groups may be overlooked.

If you are part of a group that uses the open-air fields around Gungahlin and you have not yet been contacted, please make sure you contact them and let them known of your requirements.

Information on their program is available here.
