Gungahlin to Airport bus service delayed

News - Transport

The new express commuter bus service from Gungahlin to Brindabella Park at the airport is to be delayed until at least June, according to ACTION General Manager Tom Elliott. Speaking at the GCC March meeting, Tom advised that the proposed Term 2 (April) start date wouldn't happen as it had taken longer than expected to design the new Canberra-wide route system.

In addition, the proposed route for the new service down Horse Park Drive and Majura Road would not happen - another victim of the 'Majura Road Parking Lot'!

ACTION's attempts to time route runs along Majura Road led to timings such as 34 minutes just from Brand Depot to Brindabella Park at 8.00am.

So the route will now run from Gungahlin, via Harrison, down Flemington Road, then Phillip, Majura and Limestone Avenues, then via the Defence offices at Russell to Brindabella Park (no diversion to Brand Depot). The added benefit of this revised route is that all the Defence people now living in Gungahlin will be able to use the service too!

However, you'll have to get up early. The services are proposed to depart Gungahlin at 7.00, 7.15 and 7.24am. Any later, and ACTION cannot guarantee the schedule, so they won't run it.

ACTION's Tom Elliott and Liz Clarke, plus the Airport's Commercial Manager Jeanette Hall met with GCC to discuss a tripartite strategy to promote the new service to Gungahlin commuters. We'll be promoting it via our newsletter (which goes to more than 14,000 households), this website, and any other avenues we can devise such as departmental intranet bulletins. ACTION reps are coming back to our April meeting to further discuss this strategy.

Our goal is to make the service so successful that ACTION have to put on additional services - the more buses that run, the less cars will be on Majura Road!
