GDE opens to traffic jams

News - Transport

Seems the Gungahlin Drive Extension (GDE) is never far from the news - and usually for the wrong reasons.

With the Glenloch Interchange opening another stage this month, Gungahlin commuters (that's basically all of us...) who have to travel to the south side are getting an idea of how the GDE will improve their daily commute.

But with the opening has come another bout of criticism - this time from the NRMA, saying the traffic jams on it are on par with the worst traffic jams Sydney has to "offer".

The reason is simple - it's only half a road. Why the ACT Government only built half the road we'll never know. Surely the savings could not have balanced against the cost it will likely run up to 4-lane the road later on. (Later on? It's needed already!

An anonymous caller told us this week that they were told the cost of 4-laning up front would have been $15m vs $90m to do it afterwards. That doesn't seem to tally up though - surely another one of those cantilevered bridges over Belconnen Way would chew up the best part of $15m? But savings there would have been - of that we are sure.

They also were of the opinion that a lot of the problems stem from a bunch of grass maintenance tractors that spill out of Mitchell at 7.30 every morning, causing a backlog in traffic that lasts throughout the peak period. Does anyone know any more about this?
