UPDATE 18 May 2007
After causing a measure of embarrassment for their Minister, Roads ACT have apparently improved things a bit, with a short slip lane to allow better merging. The limitations on outbound usage will remain until September though. And although the minister has made claims of all this being "widely advertised" it just isn't true. I tried searching for a media release on all of the ACT Government website to no avail, and while there was a large ad in the Saturday Canberra Times, it was buried down with the classifieds. Not good enough I'm afraid...
UPDATE 11 May 2007
According to a caller to ABC 666 this morning, access from GDE onto Belconnen Way is by way of a Give Way sign for pete's sake. Result was 30 minutes to get from the Barton Highway overpass onto Belonnen Way. So maybe leave off trying this new route until someone wakes up that lights are needed...?
9 May 2007
The next stage of the Gungahlin Drive Extension is opening Thursday May 10 from 11.00am. This stage runs from Ginninderra Drive to Belconnen Way, leaving just the last stage to the Glenloch Interchange to go.
Apparently though that while south-bound travellers will be able to turn left onto Belconnen Way and then proceed into the city, you won't be able to go home from the city the same way as you won't be able to turn right from Belconnen Way onto the Gungahlin Drive (for now anyway). I can't find any advice on the ACT TaMS website that clarifies the reason or duration for this limitation though.
It will be interesting to see how it goes time-wise as an alternative city commute route versus the daily grind down Northbourne Avenue or the rat-run winding around Watson, Hackett and Ainslie...
