The Assemby's inquiry into Action services took submissions from a number of witnesses on 15/6/07.
The group Advancement of Public Transport put the case for making public transport "sexy" and for off-setting professional car and oil industry lobby groups by establishing an independent public transport community council, including representatives from community, school and pensioner groups.
Transport Minister John Hargreaves also appeared before the
inquiry, but seemed to focus "inefficient work practices" of the bus
drivers and the community's "unrealistic expectations about Canberra's
buses", instead of taking the opportunity to map out a vision for
improving public transport in Canberra...
Transport - public and the insatiable beast of private transport -
is a subject that requires considerable vision.
I think we started to see a bit of that from our June meeting guests from Action, including their General Manager Tom Elliott.
But vision is even more important at the political level - are you up to it Minister?
