The traffic situation in Gungahlin really is getting beyond a joke isn't it? There's traffic problems everywhere we turn sure, but I'm talking at the moment about right in the centre of Gungahlin. What were the Government and LDA thinking when they decided to channel all of the Flemington Road traffic directly into the town centre??? I have an old Gungahlin concept plan that clearly shows Flemington Road traffic running directly to Anthony Rolfe Drive and then on to Gundaroo Drive - a sensible solution.
So what went wrong?
Out of all the things you don't want to camouflage, a zebra crossing is one of them! I've received reports from people who've almost been hit at that crossing multiple times, and had near misses myself. The crossing outside Woollies is a whole different sort of problem - drivers get impatient with the constant stream of pedestrians during busy times, leading to dangerous behaviour. It's all a recipe for disaster just waiting to happen.I raised this with the Chronicle, and pointed out that while crossing changes and traffic lights might be favoured by the government, what was really needed was a concession that the situation is dumb, and ACT Roads needs to do something to direct 'through traffic' around to Anthony Rolfe Drive as originally planned, and make the town centre a place for 'destination traffic' only, and therefore a positive and calm place to go shopping, relaxing, whatever.
The upshot of this (so far) was that within three days of the article coming out, ACT Roads had traffic monitoring strips installed on Hibberson Street! Let's hope it leads to positive action and we'll discuss the issue at our April meeting when the relevant ACT Ministers are there.
I'll post a copy of the resulting article as soon as my scanner's back from the shop.
