Traffic Issues Around Burgmann Anglican School

News - Transport

At the end of Term 3 TAMS constructed the long-awaited left hand turning lane into the school. Parents have reported that this has made a big difference to the safety of cars trying to enter the school; they no longer have to wait in the middle of the road watching as on-coming traffic bears down on them.

TAMS also erected two no-right-turn signs at the exits of the school's car park and the Scout Hall car park. These signs make a difference to the flow of the traffic through the school. However, it would be better if parents obeyed these signs on a more consistent basis.

I am pleased to report that the school had a very productive meeting with Minister Andrew Barr. Mr Barr was appraised of the situation and has committed strong and positive action to finding a long term solution to the problems that the school and the whole Gungahlin Community face in the mornings and afternoons.

In the meantime the school is sealing the gravel car park on the school's northern boundary. This work will not only greatly improve the amenity but will also slightly increase parking on the school site. This work will be completed for the new academic year.

Editor:

Since this issue was first raised on this website in September, both Paul Browning and I have had meetings with Roads ACT senior staff, seeking to secure a long-term solution for the problem.

I raised the issue with Education Minister Andrew Barr at our quarterly meeting with him on 3 October, and GCC also sought a funding commitment from ACT Chief Minister Jon Stanhope at our 10 October meeting. We will raise it again with Andrew Barr when he attends our December meeting.

We are optimistic that the ACT Government will help to resolve the problem, and thank the community for weighing in on the issue.
