Wanting to know what it is like to live in Gungahlin (Tam and Maxine Malley, UK)Hi We are a British family who will be emigrating to Australian this summer. At the moment it is our intention to live in Gungahlin which, we have been led to believe, is a fairly new suburb of Canberra. Would it be possible for you to send us some details on the area, with a quick run down on what life is like in Gungahlin? Obviously this is a massive step for us, so any information would be of great value. Many thanks Tam and Maxine Malley Council Response: Your request for information is quite interesting in that attempting to answer your query we too have found that there is no one definitive source of information to definitively state "what is life like in Gungahlin?"
We will attempt to point out a number of internet sites which your may find of interest, however if you have a specific query we will attempt to locate the appropriate information for you.
[a list of internet sites which formed the basis of the FAQ (frequently asked questions) section of this site was sent]

The Rolfe family of Gold Creek Homestead (Michelle Leaney)Dear Sir/Madam, I was interested to read your article on the web "History of Gold Creek Homestead". My husband, and our children are descended from George & Margaret Rolfe of Queanbeyan through their daughter Martha Matilda Rolfe. I am assuming that George is the brother of Edmund Rolfe, the builder of Gold Creek Homestead. Do you have any further information on the history of the Rolfe family than that included in the article? You mention that Edmund's father was Anthony Rolfe. Do you have any details of where they all came from in England, birth dates etc? Anything more that can confirm my assumption that George was Edmund's brother and therefore Anthony's son? Any information you can give me would be fantastic. Or perhaps you can direct me to where the historical information for this area is kept (contact details, especially email would be a big help). Thank you very much.
Regards, Michelle Leaney Council Response: This message was forwarded to the Friends of Gold Creek Homestead

Computer Lessons using Open Source Software (Linux and others) (Boni David, Amaroo)Hi,
I have read the Gungahlin Smoke Signals Feb 2004 Edition concerning a free computer lessons under the Gungahlin Regional Community Service section. If the free computer lessons is being conducted in Windows OS (Microsoft product), I would also like to suggest conducting the lessons in open source software (OSS). The Community in Gungahlin must be aware that there is an alternative form of software which is free, open source and almost have the same or better capabilities than a closed source or proprietary software. The Total Cost of Ownership (TCO) is less or zero in having an OSS. I can provide the service if it warrants to do so.
I have created a live website as an example to this using OSS (Red Hat Linux, Apache Web Server, MySQL database, PHP scripts and MAMBO Content Management System) for a Filipino community group without incurring bigger costs. They only paid the amount of $144.00/year for web hosting. The website can be seen on www.filcomsports.net .
Please find the attached document* written by Jono Bacon, one of the crusader of the open source software for non-profit organisation.
* document is available from http://www.jonobacon.org/
You can also surf the following organisations below, which cater for OSS for non-profits: http://www.museatech.net/ http://www.flora.ca/ http://www.nosi.net/ http://www.mediajumpstart.org/
Looking forward to hear from you and hoping to be of service to the community using Open Source Software.
Respectfully Yours, Boni David
