Community Survey 2002...

In 2002 the Gungahlin Community Council Inc. undertook a comprehensive quantitative survey of the Gungahlin Community. The purpose of this survey was to establish the key areas and topics that could be considered to be of greatest concern to the general Gungahlin community (and to any other individuals responding who may otherwise have an interest in the district).

The survey was made available to over 9,100 households and businesses in the Gungahlin district. Additionally the surveying techniques applied included a significant number of face-to-face interviews and the ability for respondents to complete the survey on-line via an online web form accessed via the Gungahlin Community Council’s Internet website.

A total of 794 individual responses (across all three surveying methodologies: printed version, online web form and face-to-face interviews) had been received by the cut off date of 9 November 2002. The council believes that the survey results accurately reflect the major issues and topics that the community as a whole considers to be of relative concern.

The Gungahlin Community Council intends to use the information collected through this survey to better represent the interests of the Gungahlin Community.

The information collected will also be passed to the ACT Government administration, relevant planning / development agencies, and the elected Representatives of the Australian Capital Territory Legislative Assembly.

Other/Comments:

  • Horse Park Drive from Ngunnawal to Amaroo
  • Majura Road
  • Stop peak hour traffic from civic direction being forced to drive passed Woollies & small children. Car parks are essential, what's the point of a road if you get to Woollies and there's nowhere to park
  • Close Gundaroo road around Mulligans Flat and build new road to east of Mulligans flat to be new alignment of Gundaroo road to Tallagandra lane, the current road too dangerous and impedes to much on Mulligans flat reserve
  • Fix the Flemington road extension so traffic isn't going through the town centre

Most Important Gungahlin Issues:
  • I have visited the north Canberra region many times and have family here. The lack of public transport is the big issue that has always disappointed me about this otherwise fine city

  • Employment plays a key part in the majority of issues highlighted in the survey. Without proper telecommunications infrastructure, Gungahlin is unlikely to entice any serious business to invest in the area. Business = Employment. Living in Palmerston I get little to zero mobile service and am unable to access high speed Internet services. Why would you build anything other than a house here? Implement the key infrastructure and we can only grow

  • Would like a Big W

  • Youth, aged and community facilities should all in one item

  • They are all important. Public transport, road networks and variety of shops are the most important to me, but I am single

  • Swimming pool for Gungahlin

  • We need at least three restaurants

  • Provide express bus service to and from the City during peak hours. Park and ride facility at Town Centre

  • No transport (buses) Saturday and Sunday from Belconnen to City. Also extended hours for buses

  • A swimming pool complex

  • Better banking options. Commonwealth Bank is the only bank in the area. Second petrol station

  • Get rid of the dam roundabouts, apart from being dangerous they are making my kids car sick

  • Cinema, Big W, McDonalds. Want to be able to buy interesting things not just food and hardware

  • Bus shelters. Pedestrian crossings along Mirabei Drive, particularly near dam wall

  • Hope that shopping is developed. Many people and my friend wanted to buy land and house in Gungahlin, but the shop is small so they refused buying

  • Development must be pro-active build now for the five years hence

  • Community markets

  • I think infrastructure in this region is disgusting!

  • Public Housing

  • Employment and town centre issues are closely related

  • Long term viability of Neighborhood Watch currently under threat

  • A major dept store (Coles/Myer) is needed plus a Mister Minute shoe repair shop and a good green grocer!

  • Dedicated bus lanes to Civic will be cheaper and more effective than a light rail system. A light rail system will not run past my front door

  • Town Centre focus and variety of shops are really one package

  • Medical services

  • Aquatic centre

  • Pedestrian/ cycle path from Kosciusko Ave (south exit) across nature reserve to the Town Centre. I’d even be happy with dirt

  • Mobile phone service

  • Theatre complex and restaurants

  • We would love an occasional care centre

  • More restaurants

  • Mobile phone towers so I can use my mobile at home. Broadband internet access – ADSL / Transact

Light Rail
  • I support light rail but not before the GDE. We have to drop kids off and get to work at Belconnen and Woden etc so light rail is not the only answer. The GCC needs to get a bit militant with its lobbying of Govt.

  • LIGHT RAIL - LIGHT RAIL - LIGHT RAIL

  • I believe the Light rail system should commence from the City through to Gungahlin and then to Belconnen and City forming a loop system. Initially a single-line with a facility to pass at different locations. Maybe at stations.

  • I actually do support the light rail link, but not at the expense of road development.

  • That light rail from civic to Gungahlin would be wonderful all the way through. Bingo.

  • Not enough info on the rail link. Mainly what is the cost for passengers? It would have to be cheaper or the same as a bus fare

  • I’m not convinced that light rail will get sufficient cars off the road, nor help enough people who have no transport of their own
Light rail. You must be mad, we want the same road network like the rest of Canberra

  • Support light rail, assuming that finance is available

Most Important Road Work Priorities
  • At all costs the people of Gungahlin should expect a dual road for the new Gungahlin road into the city, not a single road. This is the single most important factor to the residents of Gungahlin.

  • As a matter of urgency the extension of Flemington Road should be diverted to feed directly into Anthony Rolfe Street or the Gundaroo Road. It should never have been directed into Hibberson street.

  • As indicated I believe the GDE is one of the most (if not the most) important road works for Gungahlin. As somebody that commutes to Civic every day the only option is one of four lanes. Don’t sell us out to the two-lane option.

  • I think that the road issue is the major issue here and the Gungahlin Drive Extension is by far the most important.
Prefer Horse Park Dr connect to Antill ST and Monash Dr be constructed

  • Gundaroo and Gungahlin Dr to Tuggeranong Parkway
Upgrade Barton hwy form Federal hwy to Mouat St to 6 lanes
Kelleway Ave- pick up, drop off school hours

  • Replace Barton hwy/Gundaroo Rd roundabout with an overpass road system

  • Gungahlin to Belconnen. Flemington by-pass Gungahlin Town Centre

  • Have overpass at Barton hwy/Gundaroo Dr.

  • Upgrade Majura Rd to airport

  • Put a tunnel under O’Connor ridge and AIS

  • More lanes on roundabout at Giralang/William Slim Drive
Ban 2 lane roundabouts on single lane roads especially at Gundaroo road and Anthony Rolf/Mirabei. And all the 2 lane roundabouts on Gundaroo drive and William Slim Drive. There are a lot of idiots who think these are ideal places to overtake at top speed!!!

  • Old Gundaroo road to Lake George

  • Very difficult to prioritize the above as all have a major impact on traffic moving /safely

  • Extension on Clarry-Hermes Dr to Barton Hwy at Karinga Junction
More direct route from town centre to federal hwy.

  • Tollgate on Gundaroo road at NSW border or close to it

  • Access to Ellenborough street

  • It’s a disgrace that the 4 lane road networks were not constructed first before development

  • Also duplication of Gundaroo Dr from Mirrabei Dr to Gungahlin Dr
Duplication of Gundaroo Rd, Barton Hwy roundabout, duplication of William Slim are really one package and of equal importance. Duplication of Flemington Rd is important. Don’t let it end up like Cowper St.

  • Road around the Marketplace

  • Improve roads around the Town Centre

  • More roads around the shopping centre

  • Clarie Hermes Dr to the Barton Hwy

  • A road to the Federal Hwy

  • Provide an alternative route for traffic flowing along Wells Station Rd/ Hibberson past the Town Centre. What has happened to good planning?

Town Centre Layout
  • This change needs to happen as a matter of urgency, before a pedestrian is killed by the speeding traffic. The current planning for a dispersed Town Centre means that it will be the most inconvenient Shopping Centre in Canberra. The lack of covered central parking means that the shops are not usable in very hot/cold weather or when windy or raining. I already use Belconnen when these conditions are prevalent. The spread out nature of the TC proposal means that in order to access many shopping facilities (assuming any more arrive) it will be necessary to walk 100 metres or more to do a full days shopping. This is very impractical for the elderly and for others with small children. With the current planned layout the GTC will never be anything more than a convenience store facility, with major shopping being carried out at the more convenient “Mall” based centres

  • Hopefully the town centre will be based on other successful town centres such as Belconnen Mall and Woden Plaza. Canberra’s climate doesn’t encourage “outdoor” shopping.

  • Keep up the good work. Is there any way we can get the council to do the planning for Gungahlin instead of the Government and Development Authority who don’t have a clue?

  • Unless you are going to provide over bridge walkways for pedestrians. Town centres and traffic should not co-exist. People on zebra crossings only slow down traffic & can cause frustration to drivers at times resulting in increased road rage & potential of hitting a pedestrian. Get the traffic out of the middle of the car park & shopping centre, its dangerous.

  • Agree with Main Street as long as it doesn’t continue directly onto Mirabei Drive (ie. terminates at Crinigan’s Circle).

  • The current STREET design for the town centre is dangerous, cars and pedestrians don’t mix. Having the car park on one side of the street and the shopping complex on the other is insane.

  • I would prefer a shopping mall. Do you really think anyone will shop in an open air environment in the middle of a Canberra winter when Civic or Belconnen are so close.

  • I would have thought that a major road through a shopping centre would be a major safety hazard. A dumb idea

  • Divert traffic away/around the town’s main entrance/road. It is a disgrace having a main road through the middle

  • But we would prefer a mall like Belconnen, Woden, etc.

  • Substitute for road passing through town centre past Woolies

  • Shopping centre must be enclosed (Canberra weather)

  • Where you can park and shop in one area, preferably undercover
Gungahlin to Belconnen. Flemington by-pass Gungahlin Town Centre

  • Belconnen Mall type

  • This is madness (Main road model)

  • Get rid of the two dangerous bus stops on Gundaroo Dr near Magnet Mart. Get Magnet Mart to paint their exterior a neutral colour-currently it’s an eyesore. Do something about the dangerous peak hours traffic jams at the Raiders Club and KFC corners in the Town Centre e.g. Traffic lights

  • I’m concerned with the peak hour congestion at the Market Place, complicated by illegal parking and the fast food shops at the intersection. When will Anthony Rolfe Ave be extended to join Flemington Rd? And if that happens what will be done at the intersection at Gozzard St? Will it ease the congestion at the Market Place?

  • We would like to see home businesses more closely monitored, to be kept within the guidelines

  • Flemington Road to join Gundaroo Rd. (not shopping centre)

  • Roads around town centre are just shocking

  • Absolutely stupid (Main road model)

  • Why aren’t town planners doing this? As we are a planned city

  • It’s about time some thought went into more parking space. This is rapidly being used up. Also diver those large trucks from going right past the shops

  • Strong preference for the Town Square. The main road is dangerous

  • Main road model but with adequate parking

  • Construction of roads in the town centre as happened during the early development of Tuggeranong

  • Parking needs to be plentiful and adjacent

  • Traffic flow around town centre is a problem

  • Better traffic management is needed around the Marketplace

  • I don’t like how the Town Centre is developing. It isn’t user friendly. Can’t choose from these pictures

  • The Town Centre needs to be more user friendly.

  • Divert traffic away from the Market Square pedestrian crossing

  • Either model, as long as there is ample parking

Other
  • I would like to see the GDA/PALM whom ever keeps our “natural” areas, e.g. the little pond to the south of the Gungahlin shops at the roundabout where road works are under progress.

  • Needs to be covered by a single electorate (not split between two)

  • The new suburb of Ford will back onto Mulligan’s Flat (Canberra’s nature walk) known as Mulligan’s Bird Walk. The different habitats at Mulligan’s Flat provide a home and feeding place for around 150 native bird species. The ranger has told me that the distance between houses and Mulligan’s Bird Walk will only be 150meters. This barrier is insufficient because cats will undoubtedly hunt at night and the result will be a considerable loss of bird life. Could a local Government law be passed which prohibits cat ownership in the new suburbs that will be constructed in close proximity to both sections of Mulligan’s Flat?
